Madison Sportsbooks

Madison, Wisconsin Sportsbooks

Sports betting and Wisconsin goes hand and hand. And it should because Wisconsin is home to the Green Bay Packers, Milwaukee Bucks, Brewers, and the Wisconsin Badgers to root for. With so many strong teams to go for, you bet nearly every sports fan in Wisconsin is ready to place their bets. That is one of the reasons why they look towards Madison sportsbooks to place their bets. But, there are none that are available right now in Madison.

This is because lawmakers have not legalized and regulated state-licensed sports betting in Wisconsin just yet outside of the Oneida Nation’s casino, located near Green Bay. That doesn’t mean there are no sportsbooks in Madison though. The only way to access Madison sportsbooks right now is to go to the internet and access an online offshore sportsbook. Online betting sites like Bovada, BetOnline, BetDSI, MyBookie, and SportsBetting all offer people in Madison a large number of wager types and they have odds on a lot of different games across many different sports. Thanks to these online offshore sportsbooks, you will not miss any action on all of Wisconsin’s best teams.

So, why make a page about Madison sportsbooks? That is because we have good reason to believe that sportsbooks are going to open in and around Madison one day. The current legal situation with sportsbooks is looking favorable for the future and we want to get you ready for that possibility. Throughout this page, we will discuss a couple of things. We will talk about the legality of sports betting in Madison, the legal age to bet, and we will tell you about the best sportsbooks in the city. The best sportsbooks section will give you an idea on what sportsbooks will look like if lawmakers decide to legalize sportsbooks. Once they do, we will update the page accordingly.

Is Sports Betting Currently Legal In Madison?

As we briefly alluded to in the introduction, the kind of sports betting Wisconsin residents are able to engage in legally is of the offshore-based, solely online variety (and we think sites such as Bovada, BetOnline, SportsBetting, BetDSI, and MyBookie are the best in the segment by far). What that means in practical terms is that sports betting is not currently legal in Madison and other major population centers in the Badger State, but it is legally available. The difference being that Wisconsin sports fans looking to get in on the action will need to head to reputable online sportsbooks based in a foreign country if they want to bet on their favorite team.

The prohibitions against sports betting in place in Wisconsin are, regrettably, baked into the state’s constitution, which expressly forbids “placing a bet” of any sort – unless of course that it takes place at one of the state’s several popular Native American casinos, which, technically speaking, are not subject to the same bans as those that would be levied against an operator falling under the state’s jurisdiction. That being said, neither of the two prominent casino properties owned and operated by the local Ho-Chunk Nation of Wisconsin is pushing very hard for the state legislature to pass a law to legalize sports betting, which would be a major addition to their already excellent portfolios of gambling and entertainment attractions.

This state of affairs is doubly unfortunate for both the tribes and the sports fans of Wisconsin (not to mention the state coffers that would no doubt benefit from the massive influx of new revenues generated by a legal, regulated sports betting industry) as the Supreme Court in May of 2018 overturned the longstanding Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act of 1992 (PASPA). That fateful decision effectively brought about the end of the more than quarter-century federal ban on state-level legislation to legalize and regulate sports betting that imposed itself on 46 states, of which Wisconsin was one. However, the Badger State’s lawmakers have been a long-running history of vociferously opposing any gambling expansion, so it is not probable that they will change their tune on sports betting in the state either.

Legal Minimum Age To Bet At Madison Sportsbooks

Even though, as we have repeatedly said already, there are no Madison sportsbooks that are currently available for Wisconsin residents or visitors to the Badger State, that does not mean that we cannot make an accurate guess as to what the legal minimum age to bet at Madison sportsbooks would be if there were sports betting in Wisconsin. How so? Well, typically what happens in this instance is that a state that has newly legalized sports betting will stick to the age already established as the minimum legal age to place bets at a casino, whether the game of choice happened to be a slot machine, a card game a pari-mutuel bet on horse racing, for instance. In the case of the two casino properties that we would like to see eventually joining the ranks of the best sportsbooks in Madison, both of them already require players to be 21 or older, which means that players at these (hopefully eventual) sports betting shops in Madison would need to be at least that old as well.

As for the legal offshore sports betting shops like Bovada, BetOnline, SportsBetting, BetDSI and MyBookie that are already serving as de facto sportsbooks in Madison, they will all accept players and new account holders so long as those users are 18 years old and up. This is completely in keeping with the laws regarding sports betting in their home countries in Europe and the Caribbean region, so there is no need to worry about anything shady going on. However, we still would advise our Wisconsin readers to be cautious: with PASPA now consigned to the dustbin of history, fully legal sports betting at land-based locations could be legal at any time. There is no need to take additional risks with your sports wagering hobby, so just wait until you turn 21 to bet on sports, even if you do your betting at a legal offshore sportsbook site like one of those we recommend.

First up is the Ho-Chunk Gaming Madison location, which is also known colloquially by its old name of the Dejope Casino. This modestly sized gaming property may only have a gaming floor space of 23,000 feet and 1,200 slot machines, but what it lacks in size and scope it makes up for in familiarity and personal service that makes it a true locals’ favorite sportsbook in Madison (or it would, if sports betting in the Badger State was ever legalized).

We tend to think that local folks and visitors would flock to the cozy environs of this well-established gaming spot any time they wanted a night out on the town, a couple of rounds of drinks, a delicious home-cooked meal served piping hot and all the sports betting action one of Madison’s best sportsbooks could dole out. There is little reason why this could not eventually happen, but for now, this remains strictly a matter for speculation as there is a very little real-world political will at the statehouse in Madison to actually make this happen.

Whereas the Ho-Chunk Nation’s other casino in the Madison area is known for its comfy and intimate atmosphere, the Ho-Chunk Gaming Wisconsin Dells location is a booming Las Vegas-style resort that can stand with any in the country in terms of size and amenities. Even if you don’t want to get in on the action at the massive gaming center (which clocks in at a whopping 94,000 square feet or more of thousands of slot machines, table game stations, bingo seats and a racebook with off-site betting terminals) there are always the national music and entertainment acts popping in at the live concert venue and plenty of solid restaurants to choose from.

That is not even getting into the huge 302-room hotel and all its activities and amenities, which range from spas and exercise facilities to movie rooms and clubs for your enjoyment. Basically, this casino property located just a few minutes’ drives from downtown Madison could become one of and probably THE best sportsbook in Madison if given half a chance. Now all that remains to be seen is if the state legislature will alter its stance on gambling expansion and give it that chance.
